Preserving the Past. Inspiring the Future.
About the Papillion Area Historical Society
The Papillion Area Historical Society (PAHS) was founded in 1979 with a mission fueled by passion and purpose — to save the John Sautter Farmhouse from demolition as the Hickory Hills neighborhood took shape. Thanks to the dedication of our early members, the historic 1860s farmhouse was carefully moved to downtown Papillion and lovingly restored, becoming a powerful symbol of our community’s pioneer spirit.
In 1995, PAHS expanded its commitment to preserving local history by acquiring the Portal Schoolhouse, a cherished one-room school built in 1890. Today, both historic buildings proudly stand side by side near Sump Memorial Library, welcoming visitors from near and far who want to experience Papillion’s rich history firsthand.
But we're more than caretakers of old buildings — we are storytellers, teachers, and community builders. Through historical tours, Pioneer Days educational programs, Fall for Papillion events, and more, we keep the lessons, triumphs, and traditions of Nebraska’s past alive for future generations.
We believe history isn’t something you visit once — it’s something you carry forward. By preserving the past, we help inspire new dreams, deeper community connections, and a greater understanding of who we are today.
Our general membership meetings are held the first Thursday of January, March, May, July, September, and November at 7:00 PM in the historic Portal Schoolhouse. Meetings feature sharing insights into Papillion’s history, Nebraska heritage, and the importance of preservation. You can keep up to date with our happenings on our Events page and Facebook page.
